PROGRESSIVE DISCIPLINE
a one-day workshop
This workshop helps the manager identify how to use a progressive system of discipline by laying the groundwork for clear expectations, providing appropriate training, coaching and follow-up.  After job standards have been set, suggestions for counseling under-performing employees and documenting inappropriate behavior are stressed.

WORKSHOP CONTENT

 Unit 1: Overview and objectives  

Definitions of progressive discipline, coaching, counseling and motivation

Unit 2: Employee motivation  

Why employees work
Promoting employee self-esteem
How to reinforce positive behaviors
How to listen to employee suggestions
Give feedback

Unit 3:  Set standards and evaluate performance

How to set standards
How to set goals and assign work
How to evaluate performance objectively

Unit 4: Coaching and counseling

How to identify problems
Why don't workers perform well
Is "constructive criticism" appropriate? 
What to do in counseling situations
How to make a referral
How to avoid conflict
Assertively make corrections

Unit 5: Progressive Discipline

Who should be disciplined rather than corrected?  
How to use the "hot stove" rule
How many warnings are appropriate?  What punishment is appropriate?
How to deal with "gray" areas and possible termination, terminations in a union environment.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

At the end of the training, the participant will be able to:  

1.  Identify what motivates you and how that differs from what motivates your employees.
2. Identify techniques that promote cooperation within the performance appraisal process and how to apply them.
3. Identify methods to improve employee morale.
4. Identify methods to improve performance and meet standards.
5.  Reduce conflict through specific methods of correction.
6. Remain assertive while improving/correcting an employee's behavior.
